Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

A nonprofit institution located in the Museum District in Houston, Texas is the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Founded in 1948, this museum was established to dedicate presenting contemporary artworks to the public. As a non-collecting museum, this strives to cater a forum for all visual arts representation and recent past and document new paths in art. Engaging the public and encouraging a deeper understanding of contemporary art through proposed education programs. Contemporary Art Museum Houston occupies the whole building that was designed by Gunnar Birkerts and opened its doors in 1972.

A group of seven Houston citizens has founded the Contemporary Arts Museum with its goal to present new art space to the community and also to document arts’ role in modern life through exhibitions, lectures, and other activities. The museum has initially presented exhibitions in various locations throughout the city whole sometimes using the Museum of Fine Arts.

In the 1980s the Museum grew in a very significant that enabled them to extend their sphere of influence with exhibitions that presented and toured surveys of installations of performing arts, still-life contemporary painting, single-artist shows and so much more. In the 1990s the museum has adjusted to focus only on art made created within the past 40 years and it worked to extend its reach internationally.
