A historic community is located on the east part of Houston, Texas near the Houston Ship Channel is Denver Harbor. The community was bounded by Wallisville Road as well as the Union Pacific Railroad Association. The neighborhood was first settled in the 1890s and was platted in 1911. The community has mostly Hispanic residents.
The four original subdivisions were Denver Harbor, Liberty Heights, and Harbordale. The names “Denver” and “Harbor” merged and that became “Denver Harbor” which describes the entire community. Denver Harbor’s early residents were Texans who left the farms for the city neighborhood in the hopes to make a better living for themselves and their families. These residents found work on the railroads and industrial companies that were established along the Houston Ship Channel.
In 1939 the word “Podunk” was so mysterious it was written on the side of the local water tower. The city tries multiple times to cover the word but the name would always reappear within the days.
