The Menil Collection is located in Houston, Texas and it is a museum that houses the art collection of John de Menil and Dominique de Menil who are the founders. Mel Collection houses approximately 17,000 sculptures, drawings, prints, paintings, rare books, and photographs. This bulk collection was made up once a private collection of Menil Foundation, Inc. which was a tax-exempt, nonprofit, public charity corporation. The museum’s holdings are from diverse mid-twentieth century works of Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamps, Man Ray, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and so much more. The museum has maintained an extensive collection of pop art as well as contemporary art from Mark Rothko, Vija Celmins, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly, and many more.
The museum was designed to open to the public in 1987. It has been under The Menil Foundation, incorporated which is a non-profit charitable corporation that was established in 1954. The purpose was to promote deep understanding and culture through the arts. The Foundation pursued land banking in stabilizing the neighborhood that surrounds the museum and structured administration and operation of all the collections.
Collections Overview
Spanning from the prehistoric era to the present day, the Menil Collection of Houston grew out of personal and intellectual passions rather than encyclopedic ambitions. The heart of the collection is the 10,000 artworks and objects gathered by founders John and Dominique de Menil.
Guided equally by spiritual, formal, and historical concerns, the de Menils assembled collections whose intersections confound expectations and demonstrate faith in art’s revelatory potential.
Nearly doubling in size since 1997, the collection now stands at some 17,000 works and continues to grow. The Menil is committed to deepening its relationships with artists already in the collection and augmenting its holdings in ways that resonate with the sensibilities of the collection and the museum’s mission.
